Hi Ashok,
My course has just arrived, thanks for swift desptach.
There's an issue though, do I have to use the book and chart? The print fumes are seriously headache inducing, and cause some breathlessness too; it was apparent on opening the jiffy bag. I've tried reading a little of the book but lasted only a few moments and wished I hadn't tried. I'm pretty surprised as although I have some MCS, books are not usually such a problem. Guess these are straight off the printing press, keeping pace with the huge demand
Anyway, I can leave these to outgas but would imagine it's going to take a couple of months or more.
Please advise
Thanks,
JL |

Dear JL,
Thanks for your message. You can watch the DVD programme and not use the book necessarily, although you may need someone to rip out the worksheets for you (hopefully you wouldn't react to these as much as they are just single pages). With respect to the chart, experiment to see if you have the same reaction, I would hope not as it is printed in a different way to the book.
Kind regards
Ashok |

Okay, I've worked out I can make my own floor/wall chart. Not that it will be quite as beautiful as yours, but less..erm.. aromatic.
For the stop signs (can't you just tell I've been diving in there watching the epic session 4), I might adapt a technique that helps me in other situations where it's useful for me to me reminded of something behavioural.
If the rest of the sessions are like step 4 I could write out my own worksheets from the dvd.
What do you think Ashok?
Thanks,
JL

Looks like our messages just crossed.
You're right the chart isn't as bad, but if i make my own I can use it straight away.
I checked again and the book fumes are pretty awful, so I'll see how i get on writing my own work sheets.
Best Wishes,
JL |

I know this thread is a month old now but is the book that bad?
It's usually down to the type of inks used. I'd urge Ashok to consider asking his printers on the next print run to use an alternative ink if available.
Failing that the OP can use a face mask. Ok you look stupid but if it helps. Other option - scan and print the relevant pages.
Chemical hypersensitivty is such a curious neurological symptom of this illness. Clearly the ink in this case provides no danger to the body but the whole system goes into overdrive. |

| I have chemical hypersensitivity but I've had no problem with the book or the chart. |

I agree that my body's reaction to the ink is disproptionate, but disagree that these inks are harmless.
Since then and by co-incidence I've spoken with someone who is a printmaker by trade. After a few years of working with standard inks she became very ill, did some research into the toxic effects of ink and devised a system of significantly less toxic printing. Apparently other people are devising different processes but with the same objective. I think she told me the average life expectancy of a full time printer was 55.. that's definitely a think, my memory is rubbish.
As for using the book with mask, do you not find that when your body responds adversely to something that it will respond to it on your hands and hours after the offending item has left the room? I don't know much about MCS, don't really think of myself as having it, but if I'm having that sort of reaction I'm going to listen to it.... whilst at the same time realising that this is not a premanent state... I'm definitely not going to start sniffing the air for offenders
I'd had a really nasty run in with some wet paint a couple of weeks before, so perhaps there were some of the same compounds involved... Dunno..
Luckily not using the book wasn't a big deal, for me less of a deal than photocopying the whole thing. |
