Blood test that should be made when suffering from fatigue?

Postby StarDust » Wed Oct 07, 2009 3:05 pm

Hi, I've been suffering chronic fatigue for a few years now, but I don't think it is due to "chronic fatigue syndrome" because I don't have any other symptom than fatigue. I went to see the doctor, he gave me a very basic blood test and saw nothing abnormal. Where I live it is a free health care system, so doctors tend to have the mandate to empty the waiting rooms and send us back home asap. Since I told him I was still at school, he probably concluded that it wasn't worse enough to deserve further tests, so he told me I could take antidepressants, even though I am not feeling depressed at all and don't have any other symptom of depression than fatigue...So, I thought it would be a good thing to get an exhaustive blood test before speculating on what could be wrong with me because I'm almost 100% sure it isn't due to a simple depression, so I will probably go to private to check this up. But for that, I need to know exactly what I want to be tested. So, after making a few research on the internet I figured that people here might know what sort of tests must be made when investigating for a pathology that causes fatigue as main symptom. I found some good information on google, and I would like to know from people here what should I ask to be tested, in particular concerning the endocrine system.

thanks a lot

PS: I was tested negative to mono

you definately should get tested for thryoid problems, anemia, adrenal problems, and blood sugar issues.
Those are some of the more common things that can cause fatigue.
There's no test for chronic fatigue so you basically have rule out every other illness.

Thanks Chronicfatiguetreatments, as you wrote, when suffering from chronic fatigue, you basically have to rule out every other possible illness. I already had those you wrote on my list though, but as you said, those are the most common, but there's got to be several "less common" things that should be tested by everyone suffering from chronic fatigue before resigning to be like this for the rest of their lifes. Shouldn't there be on this site a sort of exhaustive reference list of possible diseases to check for, before resigning to a life of fatigue, so that everyone here can eliminate every other possible cause for the fatigue? I would be glad that this thread becomes this list. If I get enough answers I will make a summery at the end.

So what are other less common things to check for?

thanks a lot
