General Discussion or Questions concerning Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Re: marijuana

I am a Medical Herbalist practicing in the UK. Marijuana is illegal here for any purpose. However - I must point out that the discussion as to whether MJ is good or bad for CFS is not as simple as that. It is not a black or white issue. There are questions of dose, frequency of consumption, quality/contamination of supply (if it is supplied by criminals it will be adulterated to maximise profit) and lastly there is the issue of which strain of MJ is being used. They are not all the same. There is a strain called L.S.D. (I kid you not!!) that is described as very "trippy". There is another strain called "Medicine Man" which is very body analgesic. If you are exploring this area you need to define your MJ a little more clearly. With respect to dose: two tablets of aspirin are good. 20 are not. This is the same with any pharmacologically active substance. So if you want to eat 400lb of leaf do not expect to prosper.

I personally - as a herbalist - would just love to unstitch this mess - and find some safe footing for CFS sufferers that are looking for a herbal resolution. Unfortunately I cannot, because it is illegal in the UK. The market has been given in its entirety to the criminal fraternity and is causing gun and knife crime as gangs fight for marketing territory. Its seems that politicians learned nothing from Prohibition.

Lastly can I council CFS sufferers to treat research results in this area with caution. Much research is funded by Big Pharma with an agenda. There is a lot of skewed conclusions out there. (A recent study was set up to prove that MJ caused obesity. The result showed the opposite. The researcher still concluded that MJ should not be used under any circumstances). Researchers with funding at issue and a lucrative future in mind, do not achieve that by pissing off their funders with research results that undermine their products.
