Dr Mayhill

Postby Minaret » Wed Feb 17, 2010 3:08 am

I am quite new to the forum and have searched for any threads on Dr Mayhill's book:

'Diagnosing and Treating Chronic Fatigue Syndrome' (Ive just downloaded the 2nd edition September 2009 for free from her website)

http://www.drmyhill.co.uk/wiki/Main_Page

Has anyone been treated by Dr Mayhill or read her book and tried out her methods?

It seems very encouraging.

Hi - I have had the blood test for ME/CFS re the mitochondria (bad!). I have tried the Myhill supplements but cannot afford any more - did it for 3 months from Sep-Dec 09. I think the stress in my life, and then catching whooping cough has done for me just now.

However there is a lot of sensible good stuff in there re pacing, sleep and diet. I am on the Stone Age Diet and it has sorted out my lifelong gut problems (see on other thread I have posted).

Sorry to be picky but it's Dr Sarah Myhill to be precise (not Mayhill) - I only say that in case someone wants to look it up but to be fair you did put the link.

Hi, Sorry you are not too good at the moment, hope your feeling a bit better and that you don't mind if I ask you some questions about your treatment?

I am thinking of trying her suggestions, even though I think its going to be way too expensive for me...I am desperate to get some more energy, and my husband has decided to be very supportive after reading his way through the book and understanding a bit more in depth about what people with cfs go through!

Did you have a retest for the mitochondria after 3 months?

Were you able to afford all the supplements she recommends in her book, or did she give you a suggested list of supplements based on your test?

Are you strictly on the Stone Age Diet?

Were you tested for anything else?

I am sure any feedback will help others as well as me if you are up to it. Take care.

I am more than ever, encouraged by the advice of Dr Myhill.

I have been taking her recommended supplements for 2 and half months, using her ideas on pacing and exercise. Because I dont live in the UK I couldnt become her offical patient and have Vit B12 by injection. However 2 weeks ago I persuaded my own Dr in Spain to give the B12 injections a try.(I translated Dr Myhill's recommendations for Vit B12 for her to look at). If she hadnt offered it, I was quite prepared to try Vit B12 in a sublingual form. I also showed my Dr info from Prof. Martin Pall who has conducted studies showing that high levels of nitric oxide tend to be responsible for many of the symptoms of chronic fatigue while vitamin B12 is a powerful nitric oxide scavenger.

In the last 2 weeks, despite a viscious viral infection I got before the injections began, my old energy has been creeping back. For example, for the last year a shopping trip used to leave me exhausted for up to 3 days afterwards, as did any socialising, and working outside the house. But now I can go shopping (up to 2-3 hours) with no really adverse affects. OK a small advance, but it has stopped me feeling almost housebound. I can work around the house and garden with no ill affects most of the day now, except not in the hot sun. I can also do a bit of socializing, but not for long yet (2 hours max).

Perhaps I'll never have normal levels of energy again, but I do feel and look better than I have for ages. I have even started a correspondence course in Interior Design with the idea I could take a degree this way if I really wanted to... ie to read and work in my own time. Hope this helps someone else.

I took the advice she gives about resting until the pain has gone. Unfortunately I ended up bedbound for 6 months. Some of the pain is to do with inactivity and if you rest it just gets worse. It's a very difficult balance between rest and activity. There is a good book on pacing called 'Overcoming Chronic Fatigue' that helps you to pace. Too much resting is actually as bad as too much activity if you have CFS. I believe you can get better with really good pacing and graded exercise. I really regret following Dr Myhill's advice on this. I was also taking tonnes of supplements, including the D-ribose or whatever it is she recommends. 18 months later I realised that taking too many supplements itself was having a very bad effect on me. But I have heard of people who have done the Myhill thing and it's helped them. Personally I like the Gupta programme, but everyone has to find their own way with getting better.
