Amygdala Who?

Postby annie » Sat Sep 19, 2009 2:47 pm

Has anyone tried personifying their amygdala, giving it a name and relating to it that way? It would be a way of disidentifying from it's behaviour. One could really let rip with the imagination, anything from Amy to Adolf, from Albatross to Albert. Certainly not Ashok! It really is a question of turning this frog in the centre of our brains, into a prince in the centre of our brains, or if the guys or gays prefer, a princess!!!

Are you always rude, and have you had your sense of humour amputated?

Annie,
You are so gracious and cultured compared to me. I must still have the Australian convict blood running in my veins as I took a more course view and called my Amygdala a "mongrel dog" Now Ashok did not like that so I was told to treat it like my damaged inner child that needs consoling and nurturing as it is like a frightened child. So now I say ""dont be afraid ..you are safe" No I dont have a specific name but I do say when things are grim that Mildred has a arrived to stay a while with a heavy suitcase so I dont have to talk about symptoms. It makes it more comical and less specific.

A friend of mine whom I told about the training brought up the name Amy and she always asks me now: "So, how's Amy doing?" The name couldn't be more perfect but I had already given a name to it before.

I consider my Amygdala to be my inner child. The name I use is my real name but with a diminuitive ending (like if my name was Kate I'd call it Katie).

I like that idea thanks annie. I think personalising my amygdala may help because at the moment I view it very negatively which means I am doing the opposite to niaholts point of view and treating it as a nasty intruder rather than a frightened something/someone that needs understanding and (firm? :-) ) reassurance.

I think the key with the AR programme is to really be imaginative and VARY it ( as ashok mentioned)

include description, colours, textures, sounds and turn these all upin your mind.

Well some may think I am insane but that is ok. I talked to the Amygdala and it's job is to protect me but as we all know it has gone overboard and got stuck so I told it that right now there is no danger and so on. This idea comes from Voice Dialogue. I will write myself a note now to remember to do it more often. I also ask the part of me that knows how to be calm to do its job and be calm.
