What is it with Alcohol

Postby neil_l » Mon Oct 12, 2009 2:47 am

Sometimes I can tolerate it and have a good night with few ill effects the next day.

Other times (like now I think!) I can be really ill for 4-5 days.

I think the actual process of going out for a few drinks with friends can be very beneficial, and helps me relax and forget about my illness. It's just a shame sometimes I have to pay a massive price for it.

I gave up for 5 years completely BTW.

i had to give it up almost totally. On special occasions i will drink, but for the most part i just try and avoid it.
It is really fun though and can be a good escape. If i do it every once in a while its worth it.

I give myself 3 or 4 nights a year when I go out and get hammered.

Sometimes the consequences are minimal, other times I'm banged up for a month.

I just can't give up forever every single thing that brings me pleasure for the rest of my life.

I've given up enough already.

Youll find as you get better youll be able to recover from alcohol easier as your less stressed to begin with..rather than using it to relax you.

Alcohol is a duretic so it dehydrates the body so it stresses the body.

Thats exaclty what i do. we all want to feel better, but sometimes you just have to forget about it and live your life.
Drinking really helps with that. It feels good to just have a night out every once in a while.
If im drunk enough, i almost feel normal for a little while.

yeah i can totally relate, alchohol really does affect me for about a week after but i don't think i could go completly without it, plus like you say when you've had a drink you feel so relaxed and you forget about your worries even if its only for 10 minutes it makes you happy.

I'm only just recovering from last Friday today. so that's almost a whole week :(

Going to give it up until Christmas and see how I get on. I have some important gigs with my band in the next few months so need to be as well as is possible.

Seems like another good reason not to drink (or at least not to drink heavily): alcohol stimulates the production of adrenaline and cortisol, which I never knew before.

Now that is interesting.

Could it be that drinking when already stressed creates these week long hangovers, but having a drink when relaxed is when I am able to do it and get away with it.

Yeah, that makes sense. Ever since I've arrived at school, I've really started to notice how closely stress correlates with a worsening of my symptoms. The minute I start to worry about finals, or about getting called on in a lecture, my headaches worsen and I feel tired when the rush passes. So it would make sense to limit alcohol to the times where your amygdala isn't already acting up.

Even with the recent news about the xmrv virus, I'm convinced that my body can keep it at bay so long as I stay relaxed (since stress weakens our immune systems). So I've basically gone about cutting everything out of my life that produces cortisol and adrenaline (except for alcohol, which I consume one night a week... I don't seem to get hit as hard as you guys do by it, though I do feel it for a day or two. It's just that it's one of the few things I can do for fun). Basically this has meant a lot of meditation, and no caffeine whatsoever, in addition to the Gupta techniques.
