Gupta and severe CFS

Postby persephonemoon » Wed Sep 02, 2009 10:52 am

I've just started the programme and have severe CFS and could do with some guidance. I have been bedbound for about a week after a virus, I was managing to get downstairs for the months before. My family are hassling me to go downstairs but I am so weak and shakey. I tried yesterday and it made me worse so today I started the Gupta technique. It is helping my mood and mental alertness, but as yet my body is the same. should I wait til my energy is better and I feel strong enough to go downstairs and walk, or should I ignore the thoughts that walking will make me worse? I am confused. My instinct is that I should do the techniques on my thoughts until I feel strong enough. But it is hard when I feel bullied to be active and unsupported to listen to my body. Any advice appreciated!!

Hi Persephonemoon; I've found that doing anything (movement-wise) under pressure just makes my amygdala more stressed. I don't know if it will help, but you could try explaining that those around you. I do best when my loved ones trust me to increase my activity as it feels ok to me....but it's hard for some of them to see that. It seems to me that it would be good to work on your thoughts until it feels like you can do a little more - even if it's just stretching in bed, or walking to the other side of the room. I've been bed bound, and I found that it's a fine balance between pushing too hard, stressing my amygdala and feeling worse and doing too little and losing more muscle tone. Keep up with the amygdala retraining. It will make a difference...just give it a bit of time. Take care!

Hi persephonemoon

When I started the Gupta Programme I could only just get from the bed to the couch each day, and could only sit up for a total of 2 1/2 hours a day, (including time taken to eat). Any little pushing of my limits would mean consequences. I had been sick for two years.

Once starting the programme I had improvement within days. By stopping our bodies pumping out so much adrenaline the stress on our bodies is decreased and therefore extra activity becomes manageable.

The pressure your family is putting on you is misguided (though well meaning I'm sure). We have all learnt the hard way that pushing past limits, without addressing the cause of CFS, leads to both short and often long term worsening of the condition.

However, now you are using the Gupta programme which does address the cause of CFS I'm sure you will be able to safely go downstairs soon. In the meantime though it may be best to save your energy for a few days for doing the full amygdala retraining technique. When you feel ready maybe just go half way and back for a couple of days using the stop technique to deal with any anxiety :-)

I know it is almost impossible not to be negatively affected by pressure from around you but it may help if you are able to replace feelings aroused by family pressure with thoughts of all of us out here who understand your position and are cheering you from the sidelines :-)

Perhaps if you explain to them you will be able to cope with the stairs very soon once the Gupta Programme's effects start.

There are some good ideas for using the programme when severely affected by CFS here gupta-programme-f11/topic884.html

All the best.
