GABA, or gamma-aminobutyric acid, is a non essential amino acid that is manufactured in the body from another amino acid called glutamic acid. GABA is extremely important with regards to the central nervous system because it helps promote normal brain function. It does this by helping to block stress related messages from reaching the receptors in the central nervous system. This in turn reduces the anxiety you may feel as well as stress in general. Stress can affect our lives in so many ways but most notably too much stress can be a factor in heart disease which can eventually lead to strokes and heart attacks. By avoiding stress as much as you can, you can lower your risk of death due to cardiovascular disease. GABA is almost like a tranquilizer for the body and works similarly to valium in the way that it helps to subdue the firing of nerve cells in the brain. This makes it helpful for disorders that have been linked to over stimulation of the brains motor centers such as ADD or epilepsy. It is even though to be a treatment for alcoholism to reduce the cravings that alcoholics feel. GABA provides even more benefits to people with enlarged prostate glands as this amino acid is involved in balancing and regulating the sex hormone levels in your body. This can help prevent prostate cancer and problems with the prostate in general. Lastly, GABA has even been studied in regards to helping to increase the levels of HGH or human growth hormone which leads to a decrease in body fat and an increase in muscle mass. The recommended dosage of GAB is between 3 and 5 grams but in some cases it can be taken up to 18 grams. However, it is wise to speak with a doctor before taking such high dosages which can lead to more anxiety, shortness or breath, and numbness.
