Lycopene is one of the many carotenes and a member of the carotenoid family. Essentially though, it is a pigment that gives the color to fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, tomatoes, and pink grapefruit. It is primarily known as an antioxidant but it can also be associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer and cardiovascular disease. Lycopene is different from beta carotene and actually most people have more lycopene than beta carotene which are sometimes lumped together because they are both antioxidants. It is actually good to have a high level of lycopene in your liver, lungs, colon, skin and prostate because it is what keeps you healthy. Unfortunately, your body does not produce lycopene so you are forced to eat foods that are rich in it to achieve the antioxidant powers. It is relatively easy to get it through tomato products and brightly colored fruits. However, if this isn’t in your diet of choice, or you don’t get enough then taking a diet supplement of lycopene is a good idea for your overall health. Lycopene can protect and reduce the risk of digestive tract cancer, colon and prostate cancer, as well as lung cancer. Studies have proven time and time again that people who eat large amounts of tomatoes in particular have up to a 60% reduced risk of cancer, so you can see how important it is for your body. Lycopene also works to keep your vision healthy and has been shown to prevent cataracts and macular degeneration. Also, lycopene can reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes because of its amazing qualities. Although it is recommended that you eat foods rich in lycopene, for people that cannot get enough through their everyday diet should supplement the diet to make sure that they are receiving all the health benefits that are necessary to keep you feeling young, fit and healthy.
