Bee Propolis is a material that bees actually make in their hives as a way to “glue” their hives together. It is a mixture of beeswax and other secretions that bees get from certain types of trees and flowers. This material is now being looked at as a natural supplement for humans because of its germicidal properties even though it has been used for centuries by beekeepers and others who believe that bees can bring us a holistic treatment for many of the ailments we currently have. Now you can find bee propolis in everything from cosmetics to toothpaste, and for good reason.
Aside from the topical uses, particularly in the hardening of tooth enamel and the effect it has on our skin, it is now thought that bee propolis, taken in supplement form or added to our daily diet, is good for ailments such as tuberculosis, acne, and osteoporosis and even in certain types of cancer. It is great for treatments of burns, infections, inflammatory diseases and overall pain. It is the proven antibiotic and antiseptic properties that make bee propolis more popular than ever. As a home remedy and as a precautionary health product, even researchers agree that bee propolis has definite benefits to our overall health and immune system.
Researchers are studying the effect of bee propolis on the heart in hopes that if taken daily it will strengthen the heart health and reduce the risk of heart disease. But for now, it is already proven to help with sore throats and dental pain from a cavity or surgery on the gums and teeth. Certainly, it is has shown its use with many antifungal treatments and is included in several emollients that treat wounds and burns. Of course, if you are allergic or have sensitivity to bee stings it is wise to stay away from bee propolis because you could react in much of the same way as if you got stung.
