Dr. Amy Yasko has of late come to the attention of many chronic fatigue syndrome patients looking for any form of relief from their symptoms. She is well known for her unique approach in treating children with autism, but has more recently been expanding this approach to chronic fatigue syndrome and other illnesses. Her protocol as i have come to understand it, is through genetic testing and nutritional support of the methylation cycle. Genetic tests are performed to pinpoint the direct cause of where exactly the methylation cycle is malfunctioning. After the genetic cause of the methylation dysfunction is determined, it can be corrected with nutritional supplements. The methylation cycle affects the body’s ability to detox, the immune system, and neurotransmitters. Dr. Yasko believes that certain neurological disorders like autism and cfs can be caused at least partly by the dysfunction of this cycle.
The test also looks for a mutation in cystathionine beta synthase enzyme. This enzyme converts homocysteine to cystathionine. If the activity of this enzyme is increased, the patient can have increased levels of ammonia, the amino acid tauine, sulfites, and reduced levels of glutathione. Increases in these toxic byproducts of the cycle may lead to neurological problems and cognitive dysfunction.
This is only a theory and is not proven to work, but if you have chronic fatigue syndrome you have very few treatment options. Dr. Yasko’s treatment protocol is very different from other protocols for CFS, that is why I ordered the genetic test for myself and have started treatment with the supplememts for my specific genetic profile. Ive only been on the protocol for a couple weeks, but i need to give it some time before i can say whether its helping or not. In my last post i put up images of my genetic results. Im having a very hard time interpereting them, and i think they should really send an easier to understand write up to go along with the results. Especially with the amount of money that the testing costs. So i will post update on how i am doing with the protocol soon

I was most interested in your article and explorations into this insidious and relentless disease. What specific tests should I ask from my Doctor?
Thank you.

I heard from this doctor recently and I ended up in your website.
Currently I am following a protocol from an immunologist in Spain and is working quite well. I have the feeling that it has some similarities with this one. My Doctor checks for all the essential and non essential aminoacids, as well as for the active virus and the whole immune system. Based on the results she treats you with supplements, homeopatic antivirals, probiotics, etc…
I am quite interested in the protocol and the results obtained by this doctor in the US, because if it is working like I heard it is, it would be nice to hear.
What I like of my current doctor is that She does not use any antiviral or antibiotics, only homeopatic medications and supplements, including ozone treatment for the colon, because her strategy is to let the immune system rest while supplementing the body and creating a hostile environment for virus and bacteria in our body.
Please, I look forward for your feedback on this protocol you are following, and also how can I test myself for this genetic mutations you talk about.
Thanks in advance

hi carlos,
im actually having some pretty good results so far. It seems like slow steady progress. But everbody is different, so i dont think every person will respond to this treatment. You can get the genetic test through her website holisticheal.com.
Also there is a simplified version of the supplements you can try and see if it has any benefit. Its the first link below.
Also the other links go to the genetic test results and an interperetation of the results by rich konyenburg. They were very difficult to understand.
But let me know if you have any other questions
take care

Hi, I found your website while researching for my own site. I wanted to comment on genetic testing of the methylation cycles and Amy Yasko; it has been over a year since I was tested and my health has improved profoundly! I work with an accupuncturist in SLC who uses Yasko’s test and some of her products, she definately uses her research and ideas about methylation and multi-factor illnesses. Both of my parents died of Parkinson’s and my sister has fibro-mialgia. Detoxing excess sulfur, heavy metals and supplementing with B12 and BH4 (among other things) has brought me to a joyous level of living. I am endlessly thankful!
HI megan,
b12 is really helping me right now. Ive also heard that it helps alot of other people with cfs.
I wanted to try B4, but i wasnt sure how to get it.
How did you get it? Ive read that you can order from japan. I was hoping there would be an easier way.
Hi – I’m wondering if anyone out there knows Dr. Amy’s protocol for the detox of ammonia from the body. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!
Hello,
I discovered your website while considering Dr. Yasko’s protocal.
I see it’s been awhile since you posted, I wanted to order the genstic test but it’s $495.00.
Was it all worth it for you?
I have spent soo much money on protocals that did not work but I have hope that this one may be different.
Could you let me know how it worked for you before I invest a lot of money.
Kind regards,
Joanne
i would say that i did get some benefit out of it, because i found a few supplements that helped. But its definately not a cure. the supplements just gave me a little bit of a boost.
good luck
Yucca is prescribed for excess ammonia.
I have a son who was diagnosed with PDD-NOS–basically the diagnosis kids who have some autistic tendencies but are not severe enough meet all the criteria for “high-functioning autism” (Asperger’s). We started the DAN! protocol and he made some progress, but having the genetics from Dr. Yasko and treating him according to the recommendations has improved him so much that his attentional difficulties are the only thing holding him back from looking “neurotypical.” He has a handful of kids coming over and calling through the week, and this is something that was not in my conceivable future imaginings for him before we recovered him through this protocol.
That being said, I realized through this process that I, too, am a candidate for CFS–for all the intellectual and kinetic energy I had, I was still finding myself exhausted when many of my peers attending the same tasks were happy, up, and running. After attending Yasko’s Boston conference and hearing the presentation on the CFS study focusing on 5 supplements, I decided to actually do something to help myself, as well.
The treatment has helped immensely. I’m able to keep up better than before (I want to stress that maybe I caught the trend early and I did not have an advanced case of CFS) and my body is able to keep up with my ideas and intentions–it’s a blessing.
I wanted to stress regarding ammonia: yucca is used with proteins. The CBS up-regulation causes the methylation (energy creation and detoxification) cycle to dump out supports (such as the ever-important B12) into the transulfuration pathway. This is a really complicated process and I’m no scientist, so to keep it simple, lets just say you have two wheels with cogs, side by side. These wheels are paramount to your body’s ability to create energy and get out toxins that shouldn’t be there. If you’re starting on the right-hand wheel at the top and pour in some B12, by the time it gets to the bottom of that wheel (where CBS resides) it all gets dumped out into a system below it.
But instead of the process stopping there, there are other jobs on the wheel that need to be fulfilled and needed that B12 to carry out your cells’ energy/detox duties. To manage this process, we need to reduce protein consumption to the amount of a pack of cards a day (a little more if you’re vegetarian and consuming less dense protein sources). When consuming the proteins, also sprinkle a little yucca on them or take a pill. (Yucca is from the same plant as agave, where tequila comes from…also known as cassava.) It actually absorbs the resulting ammonia resulting from the transulfuration process. This is super important because for every molecule of ammonia, it sucks up two molecules of BH4, which your brain and body need to function. Charcoal flushes can also be a helpful tool if you believe you are having an increased reaction from protein intake. For my son, this absolutely ended his flapping, which was a tremendous help as you can imagine how odd a 6 year-old flapping and pacing appeared. Pretty apparent, but I do not think auto-immune reactions like autism, Alzheimer’s, CFS, and fibromyalgia are unrelated!
The protocol I used to help myself (and now my mother) was simple, and therefore less stressful and more manageable than doing the genetic profile protocol I used with my son. It consisted of this daily:
2 Neurological Health Formula Vitamins
1 Perque hydroxocobalamin B12 sublingual
1 Seriphos (phospatidyl serene complex)
1/6 Folapro (5 methyl folate–you must have this)
1/6 Actifol
This is a pretty affordable and manageable protocol, even for a person who is harried, tired and stressed. I will warn that some more severe cases were reported to have the unpleasant effects of detox, but want to stress that this is not a bad thing! Hope this helps with a more digestible bit of information regarding the protocol! Good luck, and best wishes to your health and happiness!
I appreciate your reply Beth, but just wanted to point out that these aren’t “auto-immune” conditions.
