Glutathione and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Glutathione is a very important anti-oxidant in the body and its depletion is often associated with CFS. Glutathione scavanges free-radicals and detoxifies the body of substances like heavy metals and pesticides. Its helps maintain the body’s energy producing mitochondria and improves immune system function. Studies have found that CFS patients are generally depleted in glutathione and supplementation may help to improve their symptoms.
Dr Paul Cheney (CFS Researcher) believes that glutathione depletion is one of the first issues in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome patients that should be addressed. Glutathione is important for detox as well as keeping our immune systems from being overrun by viral and mycoplasma infections. Many CFS patients have co-existing Epsten-Barr, HHV6, Mycoplasma infections. Cheney believes that Glutathione supplementation can help stop the replication of these infections.
Glutathione delpletion is also found in HIV patients. Its has been show to help stop the replication of the virus in HIV patients.
There are different ways to increase the amount of intracellular glutathione in you body. The easiest method to do this is to supplement with NAC (N-AcetylCysteine). NAC is a dietary supplement that has been proven to boost glutathione levels in the body. It is generally available at health food stores.
Another way to boost Glutathione levels in the body is to take a form of whey protien. Whey protein contains easily absorbable cysteine containing peptides. Cysteine is a precursor to glutathione.
The most effective, but most expensive way to increase glutathione levels in the body, is a glutathione i.v. push. It might not be easy to find a doctor in your area to administer you iv glutathione. Your best bet is to find a doctor that practices alternative as well as traditional medicine.
