Vitamin D Deficiency
Vitamin D deficiency is believed to be involved in many types of diseases including osteoporosis, rickets, diabetes, and high blood pressure. It has been common knowledge for years that vitamin D supplementation can help treat certain diseases and is overall benefical to one’s health.
But, one doctor is questioning that idea.
An Australian doctor named Trevor Marshall believes that vitamin D intake may lower the immune system’s ability to fight infection.
Dr. Marshall states that “Vitamin D is a secosteroid hormone“, and the body creates it as needed. Ingesting supplemental vitamin D may be harmful (by this theory) because it isn’t the same form as created by the body. It may suppress the immune system and alter the regulation of genes in a negative way. He believes that vitamin D may have a negative influence on the disease process in chronic fatigue and sarcoidosis.
This is a very controversial idea, but there are many patients on marshallprotocol.com that swear by it.
Vitamin D interacts with the body through the VDR receptor. Dr. Marshall believes that ingested forms of vitamin D may actually block this receptor and have the opposite effect that we want. This is the contrary to vitamin D created by sunlight.
His research shows the ingested form of vitamin D that metabolizes into 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, can suppress proper immune system fuctioning and cause delays in recovery from chronic disease.
*Note - This is an interesting theory, it is also very controversial. So if you have questions about it be sure to consult with your doctor.
